Is it Better to Share Your Goals or Keep Them a Secret?

Here at DecisionWise we’ve been having interesting discussions lately about goals.

What “tools” help best in achieving a goal, whether personal or organizational?  Habits? Dividing overall goals up into smaller goals?  Sheer willpower? Setting up some system of accountability?  Probably a bit of all four…

That said, an interesting question was brought up regarding goals: does the verbalization of a goal (to a friend, a co-worker, etc.) help or ultimately hinder a person in the reaching of that goal?  The following TED speaker proposes that it hinders:

Some of us hold that the opposite is true for certain kinds of people.  They say that the verbalization and the sharing of one’s objective help create accountability and motivation.  Some people thrive under that kind of system.
