Background

Unum provides insurance to individuals when they are unable to work. In 2003, they provided $ 3.8 billion to protect lost income due to disability. They depend on 13,000 employees to make the right choices on behalf of individuals’ claims.

Unum’s CEO, Thomas Watjen, decided to use a multi-rater assessment process as an incentive to increase managers’ performance on critical competencies, such as Customer Service and Partnering.

DecisionWise partnered with Scantron to provide 360 feedback to over 2,500 managers. These 360 feedback results are formally tied to performance evaluations and incentive pay.

For three consecutive years, our focus has been to provide an objective measure of competency for managers and their organizations. DecisionWise consultants refined the survey tool and the assessment process in order to ensure valid and reliable results.

Accomplishments

  • Developed leadership competencies and 360 feedback surveys relevant to three levels of management.
  • Tested and validated survey instruments for statistical reliability and measurement accuracy.
  • Designed and implemented a 360 feedback process that ensures participation and fair representation of raters.
  • Identified scoring trends between 360 feedback results and performance evaluations.
  • Provided interpretation of results and recommendations for improvement to function area leaders.
  • Increased accuracy and objectivity of managers’ performance and contributions.

In summary, we developed and implemented an effective 360 feedback process for 2,500 managers that is linked to performance evaluations and pay.
